I have an Epson XP-310 Printer and it will not print in black ink because it says the levels of cyan ink are empty. I am not trying to print in color; I am trying to print in black. It seems like its making me replace the color cartridges before I can print in black again. Any help would be appreciated.

Actually, color ink is needed

With most printers, you are required and need to have ink in both the black and color ink cartridges in order to print in black as color ink is needed in this process. They work in conjunction with each other. So you will need to have the both usable color and black ink cartridges with ink and are not low, the same thing applies for color. Ink is a lubricant for the print heads. Some color ink is used even if you only print in black or vice versa. If you printed with a color missing, you could destroy that print head from the friction of running without ink to lubricate it with the color ink, no oil lubricant is used in doing this.

In the printer driver, there is an option for "gray scale" printing. That

should use only the black cartridge , but you also will need a usable color cartridge installed for that option as some color ink is also used.

I had same problem even after I got the replacement printer from Epson. It was printing fine until black ink ran out and replaced with generic ink which I always use, but nothing changed. After all the cleaning, the color ink ran out one by one and I had to replace all of them (costly!). Nothing worked.

Then I tried 'COPY' function on the printer, and printed in color. The image in black came out fine. So, I figured it's the software problem.

I was trying to print the form in PDF, but I couldn't print the B&W color document. Now, I am desperate to find the workaround, so I changed the printer's advanced setting in Adobe Reader to 'print as image' and printed it.

It worked! Again, it is a software glitch, I think, that Epson printer behaves differently in Chrome, Text, Adobe Reader, etc. I am not an expert, but I could print what I needed to print. So, 'print' to PDF, and print from PDF as an image.

FYI - I was doing all the trials on iMac.

I think your best bet (as least as a first step), would to go to your Devices and Printers, then select your Printer, right click on it to bring up a menu with Printer Preferences. In Printer preferences, you will want to select the second (or middle tab) which should be called "Features". Under "Color Options", change it to grayscale. Let me know if that doesn't work.

I switched a yellow cartridge with the black one ( since I run out of yellow most when trying to print black and white) - cut the guides in back of cartridge so I can place it in any color slot. Then switched the circuit board? Not sure what it is, it pops off easily, and now the printer is printing with black ink.

I just installed all new (not refurb) ink cartridges & the black ink won t print. The color inks are printing ok, just no black. I ve removed & reinserted the cartridges & am currently running the cleaning process. Is there anything else I should do?
