I have purchased HP Deskjet D4263 and tried to install in my PC with OS windows XP. CD installation didn't detect the printer automatically. When i try 'add printer' in contrl panel, there is no USB port available in command box other than LPT and COM... how to add USB there?

You can skip detecting the printer while installing drivers. After installing, unplug and replug the USB then turn on the printer. If it doesn't work, uninstall then reinstall the driver.

USB is a virtual port for a printer so it isn't listed. If you manually add a USB printer, make sure the driver is installed first then let XP search for your Plug and Play printer.

You are trying to add hardware which is not what a printer is. Anything in the usb is not hardware.

What you need to do is add software, which will come with the printer. The software needs to be installed and it will ask if you are using the printer on usb or lpt etc.

Then the software will find the printer.

Also some handy info here if you have trouble after installation.

Laptop. Desktop Power settings

==========================

The following text is written to help fault find.

Right click on the empty space on the desktop >properties >screensaver tab >power

set everything to never in the drop down menu.

Choose if you want to login on screensaver restore

disable hibernation

choose what you want to do when lid closes, or power button etc.

click the battery tab and set the alarm and stuff so the battery will never fully discharge..

set up a screen saver say 15 minutes is ok

apply etc

Then open device manager (see help files - click start > help and support)

Or right click the my computer icon >manage >device manager

Look for and expand the universal serial bus

right click on each one listed underneath >properties >power tab

choose so the power stays on.. Do each USB listed that has a Power tab.

This is the best set up to eliminate hassles to help trouble shooting. Only choose power saving settings if you really have to.

If you want to use power settings then make sure you have them in order, first screensaver, then monitor, then hdd.

If you want to use hibernation set hdd to never, specially if you have trouble with it restoring. You may need to experiment a bit here. If you want to use a USB device to pull the computer out of hibernation, then the power to the USB device has to be set to never.

It sounds like all USB port are being used so you don't have an open one to use for the printer.I suggest you purchase a 4 port Targus 2.0 hub,Use one of the usb port in ur PC to hook up the hub& then you will have 4 available usb portssitting on your desk. they can be used for flash drives etc. Cost retail $19.85
