In my experience, inkjet printers inevitably develop problems like this. It's because the little nozzles that squirt out the different colors of ink get fouled.
On some printers, like some hewlett packard printers for example, the nozzles are part of the ink cartridges themselves. So you can at least fix the problem by replacing the cartridges.
But of course the ink cartridges aren't real cheap. Neither is it real cheap to keep using the "nozzle cleaning" procedure built into the printer menus, which basically squirts (and wastes) a large amount of ink through the nozzles, trying to clear it.
I've found that ink jet printers generally develop these kinds of problems unless they're used fairly constantly. Let them sit idle for a few weeks say, and when you return there will be problems.
Actually I've come to hate pretty much all printers.
I've ended up using nothing but 24 pin mechanical impact printers. They're slow and noisy as hell, and they're black and white only. But they can sit idle for years and work perfectly when started up again. The ribbons last forever and they cost like 5 bucks to replace if you do wear one out.
If I have to have something better I'd go to a laser printer, but I don't think I ever want any ink jet printer again. They're just too much trouble.
