Plug it in to any spare USB port, XP may ask for an installation disk - vista & 7 should install automatically. Any application software should be on disk or you can download them from the manufacturers website.

Basically exactly the same way you would connect it to a PC. Plug in the printer's USB cable, turn it on, install the software. If you don't have the CD, you can download the software from the Lexmark website. Must say a Z12 sounds old as I disposed of an ancient Z40 recently

That model is supposed to have USB connectivity so use a USB cable to connect the printer to the USB port of the laptop. If the printer power is on your computer should automatically detect it and set it up for you. If it complains that it needs drivers/can't find drivers, got to Lexmark's website and download and install the drivers for your model.

Coming from the back of the printer you should see two cables, one leads to a plug and another that leads to the usb slot of the laptop. If the printer does not have one of these on there, then you can purchase one from here:
Once the printer is on and connected to your laptop from a usb cable then the printer may work strait away, or you may have to install the software for the printer. This should usually be on a disk that comes with the printer, but if not then you can download this one. http://www.driverfiles.net/Printers/Lexmark/z12/download/page,sh,19021,735,12,.html
