I'll bet you did what most people do...you put the USB cable from the computer to the printer before you installed the software from the disc!...bad move!...remove the software...disconnect the printer USB cable. have the printer on...put the Disc that came with the printer in you machine and start the install...follow instructions...WHEN it prompts you to do it...place the USB cable from the computer to the printer..it will ask you to continue..click ok....then the software will configure to your computer.and usually set that printer as "default"...it should work. it will ask you if you want a test page..hit yes...if it works...you in..if not ...go to control panel...printers & scanners..find your printer and check it..a black check mark will appear there and set your computer to recognize that printer as the "default". Then go to your word processor and type something...anything...then file..print...a box should appear with your printer...hit ok/print...it should print! IF not you may have a bad printer! Oh make sure you have the cartridges installed in the right holder and that they are fully seated!

Have you got the original install disk for the printer? If not go to the HP web site and download the drivers for your model of printer. Once you have the drivers/install program then uninstall the old software, go to control panel, add remove software, click on the software for your printer and click on remove.
Now reinstall the software from the original install disk or the software you down loaded from the HP web site.
Hope this helps
