I have one computer upstairs and one downstairs. They each have their own printer. The one downstairs has the internet connection and the Wireless LAN. The computer upstairs is connected through a cable to the wireless LAN downstairs. How can I get the upstairs computer to print on the downstairs printer and vise versa???

I'll assume you have WinXP.

First make sure you both belong to the same workgroup. The easy way to do this is press and hold the Windows Key and then hit the PAUSE/BREAK key. Click the tab that says Computer Name. If both computers don't have the same workgroup name, click the Change button. Please also make sure that each Computer Name is different.

Reboot...

Now it's time to share the printer. Open Control Panel...Printers and Other Hardware...Printers and Faxes. Right click on the printer connected to your computer and choose Sharing. Click the "I understand the risks...". Click Share This Printer, Then Apply. Close all open windows.

Reboot

Go to the other computer and reboot it if it was still on while you were doing the other printer. When you are ready, go to Control Panel...Printers and Other Hardware...Printers and Faxes. Under Printer Tasks on the left, Click Add A Printer.

Hit Next. Click the Network Printer then Next. Choose Browse for a Printer then Next. If everything went properly, you should see the other computer and printer. Choose the printer and complete the wizard. When you are done, follow the same instruction to share that computer's printer with the other computer.

Share the computers.

Go into your Control Panel and then click on 'Printers & Faxes' then click on the downstairs computer's printer and then select 'Printer' then 'Sharing.'

Do the same with the upstairs computer too.

Both computers should then recognize both printers.

If your downstairs printer came with a CD, you might need that to install an specific driver for the upstairs printer. But probably not.

Today you can buy relatively cheap printer server devices. These print servers allow you to put any printer onto your network and print much faster then working through your computer.

Also, if any of your printers are still using the older parallel printer cable, you now can buy a parallel to USB printer cable that is 3 times faster and uses less time from your computer's CPU to process a print job.

Good Luck!

what you can do is set up a work group, most windows computers are setup with this as a default. Next you share the printer from your printer list by right clicking and choosing share. you need to give it a name and decide on using a password. Once you shared it you can go to the second computer to find it. when you open the wizard to map printers you will search for it on the work group under the name you gave it, and the rest should be self explanatory. one note though after you share it, that computer hosting it will need to be on all the time, not logged in, just turned on.

you need a router with a usb port. if you do the computer should just detect the printer on the network.
