What is a LPT1 Printer port?

We bought a new computer and are trying to install our HP Officejet 4200 all in one series printer on it. The computer is a gateway and shows the driver for the 4200 series after a driver update. It then asks for the port...printer port, serial, and or local. I can also create a port. All I know is that there is a USB connection from printer to computer. Am I supposed to plug the USB into a specific port? We are running Windows 7 if that helps. As always, thank you for the help!

Choose "local".

And ya, the USB goes into a specific port. It goes into the USB port (you probably have several on your computer, use whichever is most convenient).

Your computer doesn't have a regular printer port? Look in the back of your computer and check because most motherboards for desktop computers still provide an LPT1 connector at the back. If not, then you'll have to get the conversion cable/device that Ray mentioned. The real problem may be that you won't be able to find a printer driver for your old printer. Click on 'Add Printer' under 'Printers & Faxes' in Control Panel to run the printer installation wizard. If your printer is not listed and you can't find it on the Internet, then try one of the other printer models listed under your printer manufacturer. After that, you can try printing out your invoices. Remember to select which printer to use when you print out your invoices with whichever program that you are using. If you selected a different printer driver and your invoices are not printing properly, then you can try editing the invoices to not include any kind of graphics (just regular text) and saving them as a regular ANSI text file (.txt). After that, click on the Start button, click on 'Run...' and type in 'cmd' (without the quotes) and press the Enter key. When the console window pops up, type in 'edit' (no quotes) and press Enter. The EDIT text editor is a simple console program and allows you to print text to printers connected to the LPT1 printer port. You can select which built-in printer font to use through the controls on your printer. If you're using the dot matrix printer for 'point of sale' use and you're doing something like printing multi-paper invoices with that carbon paper stuff, then you REALLY need to find the proper Windows driver. (Unless you're using an old DOS point of sale program, heh.) Dot matrix printers are still being sold, but they are a lot more expensive than ink jet printers.
