I try "Print to File" where did the file go?

Question

I have an hp deskjet 1050 (not that it matters since the printer isnt connected) I even try Microsoft xps or "send to One Note" No matter what option I pick for the "printer" the "Print to File" option doesnt let me choose where to save the file. Its not in the printer properties or options either. I only get a prompt to name the file. I know it saved it SOMEWHERE because when I try to print to file with the same name- I get the error "file already exists, do you wish to overwrite?" I have a compaq CQ50 Laptop with Windows Vista (with all the updates and service packs).

I did a root level search for *.prn and it found nothing, I searched for the name that I gave my printjob, and nothing. I even included show hidden folders and search system files and subdirectories- I literally pulled out all the stops and I cant find it anywhere. You would think the file wasnt even saved if it werent for the file name error. I'm trying to email the printjob to someone- but I cant find the file.

Download "Everything Search Engine" after it is downloaded, just enter the file name in the search window and it will locate your missing file. I have used this search engine for years and love it. It is not a toobar. You will like it

Just tried to duplicate your problem. Went to openOffice.Org and did a test print to Microsoft XPS. It showed a bar and asked me to give the file a name. the bar also showed the file location as follows "username"\documents and created a file as *.xps. I then tried searching for the file and used "filename".xps and it showed the file with no problems. i then checked the properties of the file and found the location to be at "username"\documents.

So try again using MICROSOFT XPS and then try searching your "username"\documents.

NOTE: This will only work for you if your printer is NOT connected through a USB port. It must be connected through the old printer port. Have you ever attempted to use the "Print-to-file" check box? It's not complicated and its purpose is to save the document in a form that the printer can read (in order to print it again at another time - or in another place). This gives you the convenience of printing the file without having to open the application from which it was originally created. Suppose you create a document using Microsoft Word. Here are some options you have if you print the document to a file: * Print the document without opening Word. * Email the document to someone who doesn't have Word on their computer, and they can still print the document. Suppose you download a PDF file from the internet (which is opened by Adobe Acrobat Reader) and you want to save it on you computer. Most of the time you cannot save these files - you can only print them. In this case you would print to a file on your desktop, or wherever, and you can print it as many times as you want after that. (You have saved it to your computer) These are just a few suggestions, but you can see why it would be nice to be able to use this feature. The instructions below provide the steps you should take to use this feature: Saving the file: 1. Click on "File | Print" to open the print dialog box. 2. Click on "Print to File."
